The socioeconomic conditions, dietary pattern and nutrient intake of 75 lactating mothers, having children less than 3 years of age, residing in Urban slums of Nagpur City was assessed. Most of the lactating mothers were from the age grup 21 to 25 years and majority of them were having one to two children. Only Forty per cent of lactating mothers and 24% of their husbands were illiterate. The per capita monthly income of the lactating mothers ranged frm Rs. 40.00 to 350.00 only. Ten per cent of lactating mothers worked outside the home and contributed 20–26% to the family income. Depending upon the income most of the mothers consumed galactogogues, after delivery in varying amounts. The diet was observed to be deficient inall the nutrients when compared with the recommended dietary allowances of ICMR. The data on food intake of lactating mothers who were domestic servants, have not revieled any major differences as was postulated. Weight/height2 calculation shows that 60% of lactating mothers were undernourished.
