Background: Implementing integrated strategies for weed management is essential in maximizing blackgram yield. Unchecked weed proliferation leads to substantial decrease in crop productivity.&nbsp; 
 
Methods: The current field experiment was conducted at Salooni, Himachal Pradesh, to evaluate the efficacy of different integrated weed management practices during Kharif 2022 and 2023. Eleven treatments targeting weed control were evaluated both at pre and post - emergence stages.&nbsp; 
 
Result: The predominant weeds were Echinochloa colona, Galinsoga parviflora, Cyperus species and other broad leaf weeds were Plantago lanceolata, Trifolium repens, Trianthema species, Ageratum conyzoides. Data on weed dynamics revealed that; after weed-free treatment, the application of Imazethapyr 75 g/ha as PE fb HW at 30 DAS; Pendimethalin 1.0 kg/ha as PE fb HW at 30 DAS and Pendimethalin 1.0 kg/ha + imazethapyr 75 g/ha (PE) recorded a significantly lower total weed count as compared to other treatments. Parameters related to blackgram growth and yield, including plant height, number of branches per plant, pods per plant, grain yield and haulm yield were significantly higher with weed-free treatment followed by application of imazethapyr 75 g/ha as PE fb HW at 30 DAS, remaining at par with application of pendimethalin 1.0 kg/ha + imazethapyr 75 g/ha (PE) and pendimethalin 1.0 kg/ha as PE fb HW at 30 DAS. The most economically efficient weed control method was the combination of pendimethalin 1.0 kg/ha + imazethapyr 75 g/ha (PE), as it resulted in the highest net returns and marginal benefit-cost ratio.

Efficacy of&nbsp; Pre and Post Emergence Herbicides against Complex Weed Flora, Yield and Economics of Blackgram under High Hills Wet Temperate Zone of Himachal Pradesh

<div>Background: A study was conducted during Zaid season of 2021 on response of summer blackgram [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper] to planting geometry and weed management under Nagaland conditions. 
 
Methods: The experiment was laid out in Factorial Randomized Block Design (FRBD) with three replications and comprised of three levels of planting geometry viz., S1-20 &times; 10 cm2, S2-30 &times; 10 cm and S3-40 &times; 10 cm and four different levels&nbsp; of weed management viz., W1-Weedy check, W2-Two hand weedings at 20 DAS and 40 DAS, W3 = Pendimethalin @ 1 kg a.i ha-1 + Imazethapyr @ 100 g ha-1 at 30 DAS and W4= Pendimethalin @ 1 kg a.i ha-1 + one hand weeding at 30 DAS. 
 
Result: The highest seed and stover yields (739 kg ha-1, 2068.2 kg ha-1) were recorded at 30 x 10 cm2 spacing and it was at par with 20 &times;&nbsp;10 cm2. Pendimethalin @1 kg a.i ha + one hand weeding at 30 DAS recorded lowest weed population, weed dry weight and highest weed control efficiency. Combination of 30 &times;&nbsp;10 cm2 and Pendimethalin @ 1 kg a.i ha-1 + one hand weeding at 30 DAS recorded highest B:C ratio (1.32) among all the treatments and was found to be an economically achievable treatment combination for summer blackgram.Background: A study was conducted during Zaid season of 2021 on response of summer blackgram [Vigna mungo (L.) Effect of Spacing and Weed Management on Weed Dynamics of Summer Blackgram [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper] under Nagaland Conditions

<div style="text-align:justify">Background: Yellow mosaic disease (YMD) caused by Yellow mosaic virus is one of the major constraints in the pulse production in Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) due to fast evolution of strains, like Mungbean yellow mosaic India virus (MYMIV). Keeping this in view, a survey was undertaken in the major blackgram growing districts of A.P. to know the YMD incidence in blackgram and weed hosts and were characterized based on genetic features by comparing with other YMV isolates from different hosts and locations across the world. 
 
Methods: Roving survey was conducted during rabi 2019-20 in major blackgram growing districts of A.P. viz., Krishna, Guntur, West Godavari and Prakasam districts for YMD incidence. Blackgram plants showing characteristic symptoms were collected as representative samples from each mandal along with the suspected weed plants and were subjected to amplification using coat protein (CP) specific primers followed by molecular characterization. Phylogenetic tree for coat protein (CP) gene was constructed using aligned sequences with 1000 bootstrap replicates following neighbor-joining phylogeny. 
 
Result: Out of the four districts surveyed, the highest disease incidence was recorded at Machavaram village of Prakasam district (43.22%), whereas least disease incidence was recorded at Chinaganjam village of Praksam district (2.4%). Six weeds viz., Ageratum conyzoides, Amaranthus viridis, Parthenium hysterophporus, Vigna trilobata, Abelmoscus moschatus, Desmodium laxiflorum have showed positive result in PCR amplification with MYMIV specific coat protein primers. Four isolates from blackgram samples and two from weed plants shared 94.85 to 99.58% nucleotide identity among themselves.&nbsp;</div>

Survey for Yellow Mosaic Disease Occurring on Blackgram [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper] and Weed Hosts in Four Major Blackgram Growing Districts of Andhra Pradesh and Characterization of Associated Viruses using Coat Protein Gene

Field experiments were conducted during summer (April to June), 2010 and 2011 to study the effect of post-emergence herbicides in irrigated blackgram (ADT 5). Treatments comprising of three levels (50, 75 and 100 g /ha) of the post- emergence herbicides viz., Imazethapyr 10% SL and Quizalofop ethyl 5% EC were tested alone and in combination and compared with hand weeding twice on 15 and 30 DAS(farmers&rsquo; practice). Herbicides were sprayed on 15 DAS when the weeds were 2-4 leaves stage using flat-fan nozzle as per treatment schedule. The results revealed that minimum total weed density (8.44) and weed dry weight ( 27.2 g/m2) and higher weed control efficiency (84.4%) were obtained under combined application of imazethapyr and quizalofop ethyl as tank mix at 100 g /ha. However, this was comparable with application of both the herbicides at 75g /ha. Application of imazethapyr + quizalofop ethyl each at 75 g/ha registered significantly taller plants, higher dry matter production, more number of pods per plant, seeds per pod and higher grain yield (826 kg/ha), net returns (Rs.26621/ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.76). Thus, application of post- emergence herbicides imazethapyr + quizalofop ethyl each at 75 g /ha as tank mix on 15 DAS could be recommended for controlling of emerged weeds in irrigated blackgram.

Management of emerged weeds in irrigated blackgram (Vigna mungo L.) through post-emergence herbicides

<div>Background: Pulses are nutritious edible seeds of leguminous plants, have become an essential part of the human diet. Among the pulses, blackgram (Vigna mungo L.) is an important legume crop cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Even though there are so many factors responsible for the lower yield of blackgram, weeds play a major role. Sulfentrazone is a broad spectrum herbicide belongs to the family of phenyl triazolinone. Sulfentrazone has high persistence and mobility with mean partition coefficient Koc = 43 and sorption coefficient Kd &lt; 1 and also has high horizontal and vertical leaching potential. Even though generally used herbicides in blackgram like pendimethalin, imazethapyr and quizalofop-ethyl are helpful in managing weeds, they have to apply multiple times or have to integrate with other methods of weed management which is expensive. So as to reduce the usage of multiple herbicides, to avoid manual weeding and to achieve season long weed control without affecting the environment the nano-encapsulated sulfentrazone is the better alternative and it gives better solution for the above constraints besides increasing the productivity. 
 
Methods: Laboratory and field experiments were conducted in the Department of Agronomy, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore during 2019-2020. Laboratory experiment was conducted to prepare nano-encapsulated sulfentrazone herbicide using solvent evaporation method. Screening trial was conducted in field with 17 treatments in randomized block design. Main trial was conducted with nine treatments of randomized block design by selecting the best performing treatments in screening trial. A confirmatory trial was also conducted by using same treatments. 
 
Result: The encapsulated sulfentrazone particles were characterized in SEM (Scanning electron microscope) and also analysed with EDAX (Energy dispersive X-ray analysis) for elemental analysis, which is followed by particle size analysis and zeta potential to know the size and stability respectively. All these tests concluded that the sulfentrazone particles were encapsulated correctly and might be useful for slow release of the particle and also for reducing vertical and horizontal leachability. The field trials revealed that sulfentrazone @ 0.30 kg a.i. ha-1 with encapsulation applied at 1 DBS is better alternative for the season long weed management in blackgram without affecting the soil and ground water, as well as increasing the productivity.</div>

<div>Synthesizing Nanoencapsulated Sulfentrazone Herbicide and Optimizing Time and Dose for Season Long Weed Management in Irrigated Blackgram (Vigna mungo L.)</div>

<div style="text-align:justify">Background: Viticulture occupies an important place in agricultural production of Diyarbakır province, Turkey. However, weeds significantly impair the productivity of vineyards in the province. The knowledge of weed flora of a particular region is crucial to develop region-specific weed management strategies.&nbsp; Methods: This study was carried out to determine the weed species, their densities and frequency of occurrence in 78 vineyards of 13 districts in Diyarbakır province. Exploratory surveys were conducted to record the occurrence, density and coverage area of weed species. A 1&times;1 m quadrate was used, which was randomly placed in vineyards and weed species falling within the quadrate were noted. Result: A total 165 weed species and 128 taxa belonging to 35 botanical families (1 parasitic, 16 monocotyledons and 18 dicotyledons) were identified from the surveyed area. The weed species&rsquo; density over the whole province was 91 weeds m-2. Avena sterilis L. was the most widespread weed with the highest density (9.93 plants m-2) in the surveyed area followed by Fumaria asepale Boiss. (7.18), Galium tricornutum (4.85), Ranunculus arvensis (3.82), Silene aegyptiaca (3.70), Bromus sterilis (3.64) Lamium purpureum (3.58), Hordeum spontaneum (3.35), Anthemis sp. (3.07), Crepis alpina (2.94), Thlaspi perfoliatum (2.91), Alopecurus myosuroides (2.81), Bongardia chrysogonum (2.80), Scandix pecten-veneris (2.24), Cynodon dactylon (1.71), Hypecoum procumbens (1.69), Lolium perenne (1.41), Sorghum halepense (1.33), Sinapis arvensis (1.24), Buglossoides arvense (1.22), Daucus carota (1.21), Trifolium nigrescens (1.21), Vicia hybrida (1.05), Senecio vernalis (1.04) and Ornithogalum narbonense (1.02). The most prevalent weed were L. purpureum (66.68%), Papaver sp. (66.49%), S. vernalis (65.82%), Anthemis sp. (65.10%), A. sterilis (63.07%), R. arvensis (60.44%), Convolvulus arvensis (56.76%), Carduus pycnocephalus (55.79%), G. tricornutum (55.43%), Fumaria asepale (55.05%), Crepis alpina (54.08%), Thlaspi perfoliatum (51.95%) and S. arvensis (51.04%).&nbsp;</div>

<div style="text-align:justify">Weed Flora of Vineyards in Diyarbakır Province, Turkey</div>

<div>Background: Blackgram (Phaseolus mungo L.), a major pulse crop of Andhra Pradesh grown in an area of 3.52 lakh ha with a production of 2.93 lakh tons during rabi season (Anonymous, 2019). One of the major characteristics for selection of blackgram varieties for rabi season under conditions of receding soil moisture in black soils is their early vigour and good weed smothering capability. Early varieties due to their early growth habit can cover the land and thus can smother weeds better than late maturing varieties. Further some variations are observed to be more tolerant to post emergence herbicide application. Hence, there is need to evaluate the promising blackgram varieties for their weed competitiveness and tolerance to pre and post emergence herbicidal application. 
 
Methods: A field experiment was carried out at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Lam, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, with an objective to find out the competitive ability of blackgram varieties to smother weeds during rabi season of 2015-16 and 2016-17 under upland conditions. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The treatments consisted of five methods of weed control as main plots, viz., pendimethalin 1.0 kg ha-1 PE, imazethapyr 50 g ha-1 PoE, pendimethalin 1.0 kg ha-1&nbsp;PE fb imazethapyr 50 g ha-1, PoE, manual weeding at 20 and 40 days after sowing (DAS) along with inter cultivation at 30 DAS and unweeded; four blackgram varieties, viz., GBG 1, PU 31, LBG 787, LBG 752, as sub treatments which were replicated thrice. 
 
Result: Weed dry matter recorded at 45 days was lower and weed control efficiency (WCE) was higher with pendimethalin 1.0 kg ha-1 PE fb imazethapyr 50 g ha-1 PoE and was on par with manual weeding with inter cultivation. All the varieties were comparable and equally effective in controlling weed dry matter. Yield of variety GBG 1 was higher due to higher yield attributes viz., no. of pods per plant and 100 seed weight. Among the weed control methods manual weeding treatment with inter cultivation recorded significantly higher yield followed by a combination of pendimethalin 1.0 kg ha-1 PE fb imazethapyr 50 g ha-1 PoE. Further, varieties GBG 1 and PU 31 performed better in manual weeding treatment with intercultivation and without any herbicide use.</div>

<div>Response of Blackgram (Phaseolus mungo L.) Varieties to Weed Competition and to Pre and Post Emergence Herbicide Application during Rabi</div>

<div style="text-align:justify">Field experiments were carried out during summer seasons of 2017 and 2018 to study the effect of preceding (Rice-Okra) crops herbicide residue on weed, growth, yield and economics of succeeding blackgram. Residual effect of butachlor at 1.25 kg/ha on 3 days after transplanting (DAT) fb hand weeding (HW) on 40 DAT imposed in the first season rice crop and followed by hand weeding (HW) twice at 20 and 40 days after sowing (DAS) (T6) in okra and blackgram significantly influenced the reduction of weed dry weight accumulation by 8.75 and 7.44 times in mainland and island ecosystem, respectively at 20 DAS. The same treatment recorded the highest weed control efficiency (WCE) of 88.6, 86.5 and 86.2, 80.7 % observed at 20 and 40 DAS under mainland and island ecosystem, respectively. Among, the weed control treatments, residual effect of butachlor at 1.25 kg/ha on 3 DAT fb HW on 40 DAT to rice and HW twice at 20 and 40 DAS (T6) to okra and blackgram has recorded 64.8 and 65.0% higher seed yield of blackgram under main and island ecosystem, respectively.</div>

<div style="text-align:justify">Preceding (Rice-Okra) Crops Herbicide Residual Effects on Weed, Growth, Yield and Economics of Succeeding Blackgram Under Different Ecosystem</div>

Blackgram is one of the most important pulse crop cultivated in India. It is a rich source of protein, carbohydrate, fat, amino acids and vitamins as human food and also serves as highly nutritive livestock feed. Despite of having multiple benefits poor agronomic and management practices viz., use of poor-quality seeds, poor crop establishment, moisture stress at critical stages of crop growth, low fertilizer input and inadequate weed management are responsible for low productivity of blackgram. Out of these poor weed management is one of the most important factors that needs focus of ongoing research and researchers to cut down the yield losses in blackgram. Weeds are the major biological constraint that leads to decline in crop yields. If not controlled in the early crop growth stage, they can reduce the yield up to 27-78 per cent. There are numerous weed control methods like cultural, physical/mechanical, biological and chemical available by which we can successfully controlled weeds. Out of these, the chemical weed control method is the most efficient way to control them by sequential application of pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides in summer sown blackgram. Due to the availability of several herbicide molecules (chemical) in the market, its easy and very effective way to control weeds when applied in the right amount at the right time. Several weed scientists also suggest that allelopathy can be used to control and may offer substitute to chemical weed control or may lead to reduction in dose of herbicides applied. So, it can also be said that the integrated weed management method is the key to sustainable crop production worldwide and will continue to be the main pillar for weed control in blackgram. The present review paper is focussed on to get a clear understanding of the chemical method of weed control in black gram and has been undertaken to study the efficacy of pre-emergence application of herbicides followed by post-emergence application of herbicides in summer blackgram.

Weed Management in Summer Sown Blackgram (Vigna mungo L.) through Sequential Application of Pre and Post-emergence Herbicides: A Review

Methods: The experiments were carried out by using RCBD (Factorial) with three replications. The treatments viz., Seed inoculation [A1- Control (no seed inoculation), A2- Rhizobium + PSB (local), A3- LSMR 1 + RB 3 microbial consortia], Weed management [B1- Weedy check, B2- Propaquizafop 2.50 % + imazethapyr 3.75 % ME @ 125 g ha-1&nbsp;at 15-20 DAS, B3- Fomesafen @ 220 g ha-1&nbsp;+ fluzifop-p-butyl @ 220 g ha-1&nbsp;at 15-20 DAS] and Foliar nutrition [C1- Water spray at flower initiation and pod initiation stage, C2- Nano urea spray @ 0.25 % at flower initiation and pod initiation stage, C3- 19:19:19 NPK @ 2% at flower initiation and pod initiation stage].&nbsp;&nbsp;

Result: The lower weed density, weed dry weight and higher weed control efficiency was recorded with application of early post emergence herbicide fomesafen + fluzifop-b-butyl @ 220 g ha-1&nbsp;at 15-20 DAS.&nbsp; Seed inoculation with LSMR1 + RB3 microbial consortia, application of fomesafen + fluzifop-b-butyl @ 220 g ha-1&nbsp;at 15-20 DAS and foliar nutrition with 19:19:19 NPK @ 2 % at flower initiation and pod initiation stage had taller plants, higher pods plant-1, more seeds pod-1&nbsp;and test weight which led to higher grain yield. Due to increase in blackgram yield, the same treatment achieved higher gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio.

Effect of Seed Inoculation, Weed Management and Foliar Nutrition in Rice Fallow Blackgram for Higher Productivity in Cauvery Delta Zone of Tamil Nadu
