INFWENCE OF EDUCATIONAL AND OCCUPATIONAL STATUS OF PARENTS ON ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS OF SELECTED ADOLESCENT GIRLS

The present investigation was taken up to study the Influence of Education and Occupational Status of parents on Anthropometric Measurements of Selected Adolescent Girls. Urban girls were better in their anthropometric measurements than rural and tribal adolescent girls. Height of urban, rural and tribal adolescents of 13 to 15 and 16 to 18 years of age in comparison to NeHS standard were significantly lower and also revealed a deficit of 3 to 10 and 7 to 8 per cent respectively. The profound influence of mother's education as compared to father's education on the nutritional status of children was noted. Further, findings revealed that 17 to 59 percent of adolescent girls were normal while remaining were suffering with one or the other degree of under nutrition. Most of 13 to 15 years old adolescent girls were suffer-ing with moderate and severe under nutrition. The severe under nutrition decreased from 30.90 percent to 10.00 percent as the income level improved. Girls with illiterate fathers were suffering with severe under nutrition. This percentage decreased as father's education increased. It was evident that in urban area the percent of normal girls increased from 10.34 to 41.18 percent and percent of severely under nourished girls decreased from 34.48 to 5.88 percent with improvement in educational status of mothers. Majority of normal girls were having mothers who were just housewives. On contrary, more girls were suffering with severe under nutrition when mother was working as labourer. Similar trend was noted even in rural areas.
