<div>Background: Greengram or mungbean is a diploid (2n=22) autogamous leguminous crop. The average global yield is low and stagnant over years in the entire tropical and subtropical Asia. Any improvement in the yield is hard, predominantly because of pest infestation and diseases. Viral diseases result in significant financial losses due to drop in seed yield and quality in many important crops including greengram. Mungbean yellow mosaic disease (MYMD) can lead to yield loss up to 85% in greengram in epidemic conditions. 
 
Methods: The present study was conducted at Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University during the period August-October 2020 in three crosses of greengram viz., PLM 506 x IC 76417, PLM 506 x IC 76381 and IC 398746 x IC 76417. The mean data of five basic generations viz., P1, P2, F1, F2 and F3 of three crosses were evaluated. Populations were screened for MYMV disease resistance by employing infector row method. Scaling test was done using the mean values of various generations for the characters. Significance of scale C suggested dominance x dominance (l) type of gene interaction, whereas the significance of scale D showed additive x additive (i) type of gene interaction. The significance of any of the scaling tests proposes inefficacy of simple additive-dominance model. Five genetic effects viz., mean effect (m), additive (d), dominance (h), additive x additive (i) and dominance x dominance (l) was estimated. 
 
Result: Hundred-seed weight showed additive-dominance model in the cross PLM 506 x IC 76417. The additive as well as additive x additive type of gene action were in control of number(s) of clusters per plant, percentage of disease infection and most of yield components in the cross PLM 506 x IC 76417. Hence, selection at a later generation is effective to improve these traits. Pod length was controlled by additive gene action in the cross PLM 506 x IC 76381, whereas percentage of disease infection showed additive-dominance model. The additive as well as additive x additive type of gene action were in control of plant height and most of yield components in the cross PLM 506 x IC 76381. In the case of other traits, epistatic model was evidenced. Hence, selection needs to be postponed to a later generation. Based on gene action, these crosses may be employed to evolve high yielding plants with MYMV disease resistance.</div>

Generation Mean Analysis for Yield, its Components and MYMV Disease Resistance in Greengram [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek]

<div style="text-align: justify;">This study was done to determine the types and magnitude of gene effects and heritability of some yield and physiological traits in melon (Cucumis melo L.). After generating of F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 generations from the meeting of the two parents, Tashkandi (P1) and Alien (P2), the six generations were used in the generation mean and variance analysis. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results indicated that, additive gene effect was significant for fruit length, seed length and TSS. The significant additive and dominance effects was observed in fruit diameter, fruit length/diameter ratio, flesh thickness and skin thickness. Significant additive&times;additive effects was detected for all traits except TSS. Additive&times;dominance gene effects was significant for fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit length/diameter ratio and seed length. Dominance&times;dominance significant effects were detected for flesh thickness, skin thickness and TSS. The additive genetic variance estimates for fruit length, fruit length/diameter ratio, flesh thickness, skin thickness and seed length were positive and the dominance variance estimates for these traits were negative or small. In contrast, in fruit diameter and TSS dominance variances were high. So, narrow sense heritability was high for all traits except fruit diameter and TSS. These results indicate that selection may be more effective for improving traits of genotypes in early generations</div>

Estimation of some genetic parameters through generation mean analysis in melon

<div>Background: Information on gene action governing yield and yield component traits need to be studied for adoption of effective breeding procedure to wards development and isolation of high yielding promising lines from the cross with resistant to bacterial leaf blight, blast and tolerance to low soil phosphorous. The present investigation was taken up in this context to estimate the gene effects for yield and yield components of the cross, YH3 &times; AKDRMS 21-54, using five parameter model of generation mean analysis.&nbsp; 
 
Methods: The experimental material, P1, P2, F1, F2 and F3 generations, for the investigation was generated from Kharif 2019 onwards and evaluated at Agricultural College, Bapatla during Rabi 2021-22. Gene effects for grain yield and yield attributing traits were studied.&nbsp; 
 
Result: Mean effects of all traits studied were significant indicating the presence of sufficient variation for the traits. Significance of scaling tests revealed additive-dominant model as inadequate, indicating the presence of epistasis. Digenic non-allelic interaction model with five parameters, namely, m, d, h, i and l revealed that the epistatic interaction model was adequate to explain the gene action for the traits studied in the present investigation. Dominance x dominance gene interaction was pre-dominant for grain yield per plant and majority of yield component traits studied coupled with duplicate epistasis, indicating the importance of population improvement approaches, such as bi-parental mating and recurrent selection, followed by isolation of purelines in later generations of the cross for effective improvement of yield and majority of the yield component traits.&nbsp;</div>

Generation Mean Analysis for Yield and Yield Component Traits in Inter-specific Cross of Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

<div>Background: Black gram or urdbean is a self-pollinated short duration diploid grain legume packed with abundant nutrients and acts as a N2 fixer, fertility restorer agent by using as mulch or catch crop. But still the crop&rsquo;s value is limited due to many genetic as well as biotic and abiotic factors. Keeping this in regard, the present research was undertaken by estimating parent-progeny regression and inter-generation correlation coefficient and in turn attain narrow sense heritability values for the traits so as to determine and identify desirable and probable genotypes and their further improvement by selection in consecutive generations. 
 
Methods: The present research was aimed to ascertain the extent of narrow sense heritability through parent-progeny regression and inter-generation relationships between F2 and F3 generations for 11 quantitative traits in 14 crosses using randomised complete block design in the Experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, College of Agriculture, CSK HPKV, Palampur (H.P.) during Kharif 2018 and 2019. 
 
Result: Regression and intergeneration analysis revealed that five crosses showed positive and significant values for days to 75% maturity, thereby meaning that plants selected in the F2 population had a significant positive association with that of F3 for this trait. Estimates of narrow sense heritability were recorded highest for biological yield and days to 75% maturity. Keeping the above parameters in consideration, it was concluded that days to 75% maturity and biological yield affirm the presence of additive variance which determined as a good transmission index of genetic potentials from parent of one generation to the progeny of other, while a high regression suggests low influence of environment along with large genetic effects. So, these can be prioritized as the prime traits and used as a reliable predictor for making effective selection and improvement of genotypes for enhancing yield in subsequent generations.</div>

Estimating Narrow Sense Heritability from Parent Progeny Regression and Inter-generation Correlation Coefficient Analysis for Yield and Component Characters in Segregating Lines of Urdbean [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper]

<div>Background: Induction of mutation plays an important role in the breeding programme among modern methods of plant breeding. Genetic variability is prerequisite for crop improvement and through induced mutation it was found to be very effective for creating variability in the quantitative and qualitative characters. Hence, the present study was aimed to induce genetic variability within short time. In the present investigation positive as well as negative impact on quantitative traits were recorded. 
 
Methods: The experiment material comprised of seeds of horsegram [Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc] variety Paiyur 2 which was subjected to ethyl methane sulphonate (02, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5%), gamma radiation (100, 200, 300 and 400 Gy) and combination treatments. The mutations affecting gross morphological changes in growth and yield characters such as plant habit, flowering, pod morphology, maturity and seed yield were scored as quantitative characters. The micro mutations at population level can be easily detected in the form of increased variations for quantitative traits in the segregation of mutagen treated populations. Micro mutations can alter morpho-physiological characters hence they are of a particular interest to the plant breeders. ANOVA test was performed to determine the significant differences and duncan&rsquo;s multiple range test (p=0.05) to compare the differences among treatment means.&nbsp; 
 
Result: Among the twenty-five treatments studied both the mutagens, gamma radiations and Ethyl Methane Sulphonate proved to be very effective to induce variability in quantitative traits in M2 and M3 generations. The results of Duncan&rsquo;s multiple range test analysis revealed that the treatment of mutagens in combinations induced more positive effects as compared to that of using alone. The combined treatments were found positive for improvement of primary branches per plant, no. of pods per plant, pod length, no. of seeds/pod and seed yield per plant in M2 and M3 generations whereas the treatment of gamma irradiation imparted its significant role for improvement of plant height, days required for 50% flowering, days to maturity and 1000 seed weight in both M2 and M3 generations whereas the treatment with Ethyl Methane Sulphonate is useful for improving no. of pods per plant and no. of seeds/pod in M2 generation alone.</div>

Studies on Effect of Mutagens on Quantitative Characters in M2 and M3 Generation of Horsegram [Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc]

<div style="text-align: justify;">Background: The nature and magnitude of gene action decides the choice of breeding procedure for achieving desired genetic improvement in any crop. It is particularly important to have an idea of gene interactions for getting genetic advance for polygenic traits such as yield and fiber traits in cotton.&nbsp; Method: The current study was undertaken to investigate the gene action controlling yield and components traits in eight Gossypium hirsutum varieties by using means of the six generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1&nbsp;and BC2) of 8 x 8 diallel crossing program. The mean of the crosses for the traits in each generation were used for generation mean analysis. Conclusion: Results revealed that the estimated mean effects (m) were highly significant for all traits, indicating quantitative inheritance of these traits. Out of the seven traits under study five traits showed significance for at least one scaling test. Additive and dominant gene effects were significant for seed cotton yield and number of monopods with larger magnitude of dominance effects than additive ones. Dominance, additive x dominance and dominance x dominance were significant for boll weight, number of monopods, seed cotton yield and seed index. Narrow-sense heritability and genetic advance were found low for most of the traits.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Generation Mean Analysis for Yield and Its Component Traits in Diallel Population of Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)</div>

<div>Background: Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most important pulses. Helicoverpa armigera [Hubner] is the most devastating chickpea pest responsible for substantial yield loss. Chickpea crop is damaged by a large number of insect species, both under field conditions and in storage. Productivity losses by gram pod borer range from 20 to 90 per cent depending upon the severity of insect attack. Among the biotic factors responsible for low yield the, damage due to insect pests is the major limiting factor. Keeping the above facts in view, the present investigation was planned and carried out to establish a new generation molecules are comparatively safer to natural enemies, honeybees and other pollinators than old generation molecules play an important role in reducing the pest populations.&nbsp; 
 
Methods: Field experiment was during Rabi season 2018-19 on chickpea in district Rewa. The field was prepared following the recommended package of practices. The incidence of H. armigera was observed from five randomly selected plants from four middle rows of each plot at weekly interval. The spray of insecticides was applied as soon as the pest incidence is noted. The first spray was done at 50% flowering stage of the crop and repeated after 15 days. Pre-treatment observation on pest population was undertaken one day before the application of the first spray by direct counting of H. armigera larvae per five randomly pre-selected plants in each plot. Similar procedure was followed for post-treatment observation which was recorded at 1, 3, 7, 10, 15 days after both the spray operations. 
 
Result: The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with 09 treatments (Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 37 g a.i./ha, Fipronil 5% SC @ 50 g a.i./ha, Indoxacarb 15.8 EC @ 79 g a.i./ha, Spinosad 45 SC @ 90 g a.i./ha, Novaluron 10 EC @ 100 g a.i./ha, Emamectine benzoate 5 SG @ 10 g a.i./ha, Neem oil 0.15% , Bt.K. 3.5% and untreated check. First spray of insecticides over all mean analysis indicated that all the insecticidal treatments were significantly effective in reducing the larval population of Helicoverpa armigera Hub. as compared to untreated plots (1.56 larvae/plant) in the first and second spray (0.92 larva/plant) of insecticides over all mean larval population Indoxacarb 15.8 EC @ 79 g a.i./ha was effective in controlling the incidence of gram pod borer&nbsp; due to the first spray (0.59 larva/plant) and also the second spray (0.27 larva/plant) among all treatments. Resulting in the seed yield 1989.00 kg/ha with the highest cost: benefit ratio of 1:12.3, which was followed by the treatment of Emamectin benzoate 5 SG @ 10 g a.i./ha with cost benefit ratio of 1:10.83.</div>

Efficacy of New Generation Insecticides in Comparison with Biopesticides and their Economics against Chickpea Pod Borer (Helicoverpa armigera Hub.)

<div>Background: Mungbean is one of the most important legume crop with high nutritional value and is consumed in various forms in different parts of India. In order to meet its growing demand, there is a need to increase the yield through adoption of breeding approaches like heterosis breeding and breeding for high yielding varieties. This demands a critical study of the gene action involved in regulation of yield and yield attributing traits which can be achieved through generation mean analysis. 
 
Methods: In the present study, generation mean analysis was undertaken using five parameter model to estimate the nature and magnitude of gene action of yield and its component traits in six crosses of greengram. 
 
Result: Magnitude of dominance gene effect was reported to be higher than additive gene effect in most of the crosses. Either one or both the interaction components were found significant for all the traits besides number of branches per plant and hundred seed weight. It was evident from the study that the yield components could be improved by exploiting both additive and non-additive gene effects. The transgressive segregants thus produced will prompt the development of desirable high yielding genotypes.</div>

Gene Action Studies for Yield and its Related Traits by using Generation Mean Analysis in Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek]

<div>Background: Indirect selection for yield contributing traits in segregating generation is practiced to realize the potential yields. However, the effectiveness of selection either in early or late segregating generation is a debatable issue in self pollinated crops. The issue is addressed in chickpea by analyzing four segregating generations of a cross in the same season.&nbsp; 
 
Method: A bold seeded desi chickpea variety BGD 103 crossed with JAKI 9218. The segregating generations were advanced up to F5 without selection and retaining part of the seeds in each generation. The populations comprised of 162 F&shy;2 plants, 162 F3, F4 and F5 progeny rows were evaluated during rabi 2018-19. The observations on seed traits were recorded and data was subjected to statistical analyses to estimate correlation among the traits in each generations, inter-generation correlation and heritability. 
 
Result: The range of variation for the traits narrowed with advancement of the generations. The heritability decreased for seed weight, increased for number of pods per plant and number of seeds per plant with the advancement of generation. In all the four generations, seed yields were associated with number of pods per plant, seeds per plant and seed weight. The change in association among seed traits different generations and estimates of inter-generation correlations suggest that simultaneous improvement of seed weight, seed number and seed yield could be achieved by selection in F3 and F4 generations.</div>

<div>Genetic Enhancement of Yield Traits in Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.): An Analysis of Selection in Early Segregating Generations</div>

Background: MDU-1 is a high yielding, indeterminate cluster bean variety. In order to develop determinate mutant with high yield, MDU-1 cluster bean variety was irradiated using gamma rays, electron beam and combination of gamma rays and EMS with different doses and the variability induced in M5 generations were studied.&nbsp; 
 
Methods: Twenty one best individual plants from M4 generation were selected based on plant height and higher yield and forwarded to M5 generation where they were evaluated in RBD with three replications. Fourteen non-segregating mutant lines with desirable traits were identified in M5 generation and were evaluated for variability along with the parent MDU1.&nbsp; 
 
Result: Five best mutant lines namely ACMC-020-04, ACMC-020-11, ACMC-020-08, ACMC-020-10 and ACMC-020-11 were selected from the 14 accessions based on per se performance and variability analysis. The selected mutants needs to be forwarded for stability testing in different environments.
