In this study an attempt has been made to examine the rate of growth as well as forecasting of area and productiqn of sugarcane and factors influencing variability of yield in different zones of the state. For forecasting, linear, quadratic, exponential, cubic and many other functions have been fitted and projections have been made on the basis of the best fitted regression equation. The negative but lower growth rate in area is compensated by the higher positive growth rate in productivity which resulted in increase in production of sugarcane over the period under study. The projection of area, production and yield indicated the vital potential of sugarcane production in the state. The lower yield variability in majority of sugarcane districts has strengthened the argument for substituting the most detrimental cropping pattern'of Paddy-wheat and cotton-wheat to the natural resoUi ces of land and water by sugarcane. Thus, policy makers, stake holders and beneficiaries (farmers) should take necessary steps to check the decline in area under sugarcane without further delay
