A field experiment was conducted during 1998-99 and 1999-2000 to study the effect of integrated nutrient management system on the energy use efficiency of four rice based cropping systems. Application of 75 per cent RDF as chemical + 25 per cent as FYM and vermicompost along with or without Azospirillum produced significantly higher grain yield of rice. Rabi rice required more energy input compared to the kharif  rice. The mean energy input for the four summer crops were of the order groundnut>cowpea>okra>sesame. Substituting 25 per cent of the recommended dose of chemical nitrogen for rice, with organics and / or biofertilizers increased the comparative energy efficiency of rice based cropping systems. Rice-rice-okra was the most energy efficient crop sequence in the sandy loam soils of Kerala.
