EFFECT OF DIFFERENT DEPTH OF PLOUGHING AND MULCHES ON MOISTURE EXTRACTION AND YIELD OF RABI PIGEONPEA {CAJANUS CAJAN (L.) MILLSP}
1Department of Agronomy, N.M.College of Agriculture, Gujarat Agricultural University, Navsari - 396 450, India
ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted on clayey soil, to study the effect of varying depths of ploughing and mulches on soil moisture extraction and yield of rabi pigeonpea. Tillage upto 15.0 cm depth had favourable effect on plant height, leaf area, grains per pod, pods per plant, test weight, grain and stalk yield. In deep tillage higher grain yield to the tune of 15.95 per cent was obtained as compared to shallow tillage. Among the mulches, black poly~thylene mulch and sugarcane trash mulch registered significantly higher growth rate and yield over the soil mulch but both of them were at par. The magnitude of increase in grain yield over no mulch was 20.53, 53.41 and 58.97 per cent under the soil, sugarcane trash and black polyethylene mulch, respectively.
