Five different chemicals viz., copper oxychloride, mancozeb, carbendazim, boric acid and potassium permenganate were evaluated in vitro for their effect on growth and spore germination of Alternaria tomato(Cooke) G.F. Weber causing fruit rot of tomato. Results revealed that copper oxychloride and mancozeb were more effective in inhibiting the growth and spore germination of A. tomato. These chemicals were further evaluated for their pre- and post-treatment effect on the development of fruit rot. Though, copper oxychloride and mancozeb were more effective as compared to rest of the chemicals, pre-treatment of chemicals was found more effective as compared to post-treatment in general.
