ABSTRACT
A field experiment was carried out for three successive years from 2000-2003 in degraded jhum
fallow at Silonijan (Karbi Anglong) Assam to study the impact of integrated use of green manure
along with inorganic fertilizer on yield and nutrient status of soil. The treatment combination consisted
of Gmelina arborea and Trewa nudiflora as green manure and combined application of green
manure along with recommended dose of NPK fertilizer. Study revealed that grain and straw yield
of rice increased over control in both the treatment studied and it was found to be more significant
in integrated application of green manure and inorganic fertilizer. Combined application of green
manure and inorganic fertilizer increased N and K uptake of rice and highest value was recorded as
21.56 kg/h in G. arborea and 53.04 kg/h in T. nudiflora treated plot respectively. Significant increase
of organic carbon and NPK content of soil was also recorded in combined treatment. From the study
it was concluded that G. arborea and T. nudiflora could be used as green manure and when applied
with inorganic fertilizer it contributed a lot to improve degraded jhum fallow by increasing productivity
and nutrient status of soil.
