Agriculture remains one of the most important sector for India’s economy, contributing 16.00 per cent to GDP and employing nearly half the workforce. However, it faces significant production, price, financial and institutional risks, with production risks alone accounting for about one-third of total farm risks. Crop insurance has thus been promoted as a formal risk-transfer mechanism. Despite government-backed schemes such as CCIS,1985; NAIS,1999 and PMFBY, 2016, adoption remains low, with under 10.00 per cent coverage as of 2019. A systematic literature review was conducted per PRISMA guidelines. Searches in Scopus using keywords related to crop insurance and Indian schemes yielded 260 records between 2000-2025, supplemented by 12 external sources identified via backward citation. Various inclusion/ exclusion criteria, including literature type, language, region and period, were used to identify relevant studies. This study has used vos-viewer for the analysis. Research output increased substantially after 2019, with 58.00 per cent of studies published between 2020 and 2025. Analytical methods mainly included OLS regression, followed by Logit/Probit regression and Propensity Score Matching. Five key demand-side factors were identified: (i) Social and demographic factors; (ii) Economic factors; (iii) Behavioral factors; (iv) Structural and institutional factors; (v) Geographical factors.
