HETEROSIS AND INBREEDING DEPRESSION IN SEED CROP OF OKRA {ABELMOSCHUS ESCULENTUS (L.) MOENCH}
1Department of Agricultural Botany,
Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar
ABSTRACT
An experiment was conducted to study the extent of heterosis and inbreeding depression for seven quantitative characters in seed crop of okra from F 1 and F 2 generations of six cross combinations. The crosses TCR 2056 x Parbhani Kranti and TCR 852 x Arka Anamika exhibited positive heterosis and low inbreeding depression for the traits plant height, number of branches, and number of capsules per plant, indicating the presence of additive and epistatic gene aCtion. The crosses TCR 2056 x Parbhani Kranti and TCR 852 x Arka Anamika observed negative heterosis and high inbreeding depression for capsule weight, number of seeds per capsule and seed weight per capsule, inferred that non-additive gene was important.
