The experiments for the evaluation of land race restorers against shoot fly were laid out at Bijapur, Karnataka in post rainy seasons of 2001-02 and 2002-03. Seventeen sorghum lines including 12 land races, 3 local checks, one resistant and one susceptible check were evaluated. The land race viz., Madabhavi local with 16.9 per cent dead hearts was at par with resistant check (IS 2312). The other land races like Kannolli local, Muddihali jola, Afzalpur local, Lakkadi, Chiitapur local, Yaranal local and Khatizapur local with 18.5, 19.3, 22.2, 19.9, 19.5, 24.0 and 24.9 per cent dead hearts which showed moderate level of resistance were at par with the popular rabi variety, M 35-1 (21.0%). The newly developed CMS lines viz BJMS-1A, BJMS-2A, BJMS-3A and BJMS-4A were also at par with local check variety, M 35-1 with respect to shoot fly tolerance and grain characteristics.
