Quauly of direct seeded rice cultivars

Rice varieties, 34 in number, were grown by direct seeding in a field experiment and analyzed for various cooking and physical qualities. Varieties varied considerably with regard to quality parameters. 1000-grain weight varied from 16.59 to 29.18 g, hulling 68.9 to 82.9%, milling 56.1 to 74.2%, head rice recovery 19.7 to 49.4%, kernel length-KL (uncooked) 5.1 to 7.1 mm, kernel breadth - KB (uncooked) 1.7 to 2.4 mm, KL/KB ratio 2.31 to 3.94, KL (cooked) 9.5 to 12.7 mm, KB (cooked) 2.5 to 3.6 mm, kernel elongation ratio 1.39 to 1.98, alkali score 2.6 to 6.6, volume expansion 2.78 to 3.12, water uptake number 390 to 500, amylose content 15.15 to 41.62, gel consistency 30 to 100, and aroma absent to strong.
