From Mountain Farming to Desert Success: My Research Journey at Wadi Dafta Plantation

Agriculture in Fujairah carries a unique character shaped by its mountainous terrain, cooler microclimates, and fertile valleys. At Wadi Dafta Plantation, located in one of the most biologically rich areas of the eastern region, my work centers on studying plant performance under these natural mountain conditions—then transferring this knowledge to farmers across the UAE, including those cultivating in desert regions.
Over the years, I have focused on experimenting with rare and high-value crops such as cacao, longan, noni, amla, and select mango varieties. Fujairah’s unique climate offers an ideal environment for early-stage trials, allowing us to understand growth patterns, stress responses, and soil–water relationships before these trees are distributed to farmers in harsher desert environments.
Our plantation functions as both a research hub and a nursery. We grow, evaluate, and then supply thousands of seedlings to farms in the interior sandy regions, advising growers on irrigation, soil improvement, shading techniques, and organic amendments. This has resulted in successful desert cultivation of crops previously believed to be impossible in such climates.
Sustainability remains at the heart of our work. We prioritize solar energy, biological fertilizers, and soil enhancers that improve water retention—critical for desert farmers facing evaporative stress and salinity challenges. Many of our findings are shared through workshops, field visits, and community training sessions that bring together farmers, youth groups, and agricultural enthusiasts.
My journey demonstrates how mountain-based agricultural research in Fujairah can directly strengthen national food security by enabling successful desert farming across the UAE. Through platforms like GARCX, I hope to inspire researchers to explore climate-adaptive solutions that harness local microclimates while supporting innovation in arid-zone agriculture.
