An editor is a protagonist in the domain of the journal publishing. He has to look after all the minuscule intricacies and engaging factors to elevate the journal. He carries the responsibility towards an author or other members in order to accommodate them in delivering complete manuscripts to form an article. He also ensures whether the suitable and substantial papers for the journal have been submitted by the author or there is any need to get the additional manuscript from the author. If it is found required to receive extra manuscripts for the journal, he helps the author for further assistance. The key role of the editor is to bring forward the best of the scholarly knowledge in a particular field of publishing while maintaining a strong balance among the other key factors of the journal. 

Proper scrutiny of the manuscripts

At the time of the submission of the papers, they go under some initial scrutinizing. The findings from the scientific works are ascertained whether the research on a certain subject is sufficient and suitable for publishing a journal. The editor checks if there is any errata in the intellectual property.  

Therefore, it is necessary to determine that the content of the manuscripts has an appropriate table, proper structure, the figures, and the references in a professional manner. The elements of the papers that need to be presented in the journal are checked with the precise outlined guidelines in the journal’s instructions. These instructions are precisely followed for the perfect publication. it is ensured that the articles for the publication may avoid rejection of the article in the process of publishing.

Responsibility towards peer-reviewers 

An editor is also saddled with the responsibility to forward the manuscript to the peer-reviewers. Once the editor determines through the initial scrutiny of the papers or the manuscripts that they include all the necessary details, content and formatting, the process of the peer-review is commenced. The submitted papers or the manuscripts by the author are sent to the peer-reviewers. It is an imperative task to find and appoint peers to review the papers. Competent experts are chosen to review the articles as the feedback on them is required. It is kept in mind that the proper and timely review is done by them. The journal-editors should exercise their capacity for valuable reviewing as it is an important part of the publication process. Having sent the papers to the expert –reviewers, the reports are demanded from them by the editor. Once the reports from the reviewers are submitted, the editor assesses them with the proper care whether the documents formed by the author carries scholarly studies or not. The reviews from the experts for the publication lies at the discretion of the editor. He can also request the reviewers for further assistance on the information received from them. 

Responsibility towards the author  

Apart from the reviews, suggestions, and changes advised by the peers, the editor has to ensure many other developments in the domain of publishing. The confidentiality of the documents is the prime concern of the editor. The reviewers are not allowed to take advantage of the works of the author. It is the accountability of the editor to determine that none of the substantial and significant parts of the content is misused by the co-experts. The Knowledge gained by the reviewers must be in safe hands. Its disclosure needs to be discouraged by all reviewers.

The responsibility towards the authorship

The editor needs to ascertain that there is not any type of conflict of authorship. Authorship criteria must be identified whether there is an individual or group authorship. It needs to be verified with the content submitted by the individual or group authorship. The authors are required to acknowledge that the papers or the manuscripts that they carry are properly meeting with the best of the editor’s knowledge. It is also required from the authors to review and accept the entire responsibility for the content that they have contributed to the final draft with the personal signatures from all of them. Many a time, with the discretion of the editor, it is also required from the authors to be the guarantor to take responsibility for the entire work for the final article. There should be a proper and additional reference of the authors for the reader to have discourse with the author in case of gaining further knowledge from them.

The responsibility towards the scientific community

The editor also holds the responsibility towards the scientific community in the field of a particular study. The manuscripts are the foundation stone of the journal on any distinct research. Therefore, it is indispensable for the editor to evaluate all the manuscripts or the papers for the publication to ensure that the study material which is being manifested in the paper is well-ordered for the scientific community. The research-based finding should be included in the journal to provide the learned references provided in the manuscript.
