HERITABILITY ESTIMATES FOR GROWTH AND CARCASS TRAITS IN LANDRACE PIGS
1Animal Genetics Division,
Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar-243122, India
ABSTRACT
Data on growth and carcass traits of 2266 Landrace pigs maintained at IVRI and Khanapara centers of AICRP on pigs were analyzed by full-sib correlation method. The heritability estimates of growth traits up to weaning weight indicated the possible inclusion of maternal effects. But heritability estimate for post-weaning daily weight gain revealed almost similar magnitude when estimated from sire (0.80±0.23) and dam (0.86±0.16) component of variance. The high estimates of heritability for live weight, carcass weight, age at slaughter and ham weight indicated that a desirable improvement can be achieved through direct selection for these traits. The heritability estimates for dressing percentage, carcass length and loin eye area were observed very low from sire component, this indicated the involvement of maternal effect in the inheritance of these traits.
