COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF MOLECULAR MARKERS IN ASSESSMENT OF GENETIC DIVERSITY OF JOWAR (SORGHUM SP.)

ABSTRACT
Sorghum is one of the widely grown cereal crop in the western region of India. A study was undertaken to ascertain the genetic diversity in sorghum accessions using 20 Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and 15 Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) markers. Based on polymorphic information content (PIC) and unique banding pattern five RAPD and six ISSR markers were found to be highly discriminative. The PIC values ranged from 0.08 to 0.20 for RAPD and from 0.04 to 0.31 for the ISSR markers. Cluster analysis of RAPD and ISSR markers indicated high genetic diversity among the sorghum accessions.
