A study was carried out in selected districts of Assam and data pertaining to year 1995–96 on various aspects of energy utilization for maintenance of tea gardens was collected. It was found that percentage contribution to total energy input for plucking of tea leaves was highest (62.6063.70%), followed by irrigation (24.68–25.50%). The plucking of tea leaves was found to be critical and practise operation. The maintenance of garden was human energy intensive and its percentage contribution to total energy input was highest (41.05–42.44%), followed by fertilizer (34.73–38.80%) and these two were critical and major sources of energy. The overall variation of energy input among various categories of gardens was not much.
