HETEROSIS IN OKRA {ABELMOSCHUS ESCULENTUS (L.) MOENCH}
1Depar,tment of Agricultural Botany. College of Agriculture.
Gujarat Agricultural University. Junagadh - 362 001. India
ABSTRACT
Heterosis was studied in okra through 8 × 8 diallel analysis. Analysis of variance manifested highly significant differences for days to 50 per cent flowering, days to first picking, fruit length, fruit girth, number of nodes on main stem, internodal length, plant height, leaf area and yield per plant indicating the presence of considerable genetic diversity among the material studied. The magnitude of heterosis varied from cross-to-cross. Degree of heterosis was higher for fruit length, internodal length, leaf area and yield per plant, moderate for number of nodes on main stem and plant height, while days to 50 per cent flowering, days to first picking and fruit girth exhibited low degree of heterosis. The cross combination No. 129 × JNDO-5 exhibited highest heterobeltiosis (52.22%) for yield per plant followed by No. 74 × JNDO-5 (40.45%) and No. 114 × JNDO-5 (37.96%) which may be used for exploitation of hybrid vigor on commercial scale after sufficient testing.
