Total 630 paddy seed samples of different varieties were collected from Nasik, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur districts and from Seed Testing Laboratory, Pune during 1999 to 2006 and analysed for the incidence of bunt [Tilletia barclayana (Bref.) Sacc. and Syd.]. Similarly, 391 seed samples of paddy varieties collected from Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Pune, Nasik and Konkan region and anslysed for incidence of false smut [Ustilaginoidea virens (Cooke) Takashi]. The incidence of bunt and false smut on commercially cultivated varieties ranged from 0.00 – 0.4 and 0.00 – 72.92 per cent respectively. The incidence of bunt was low as compared to false smut. The incidence of false smut was highest i.e. 72.92% on Kundlika variety of paddy.
