Bioactive peptides apart from acting like nutrients have synergestic effect on
physiological performance of farm animals due to their multifunctional properties. The
effect of these bioactive peptides depends upon the amino acid sequence they carry.
Some natural types of bioactive peptides and their mode of action in rumen and down
the gut were discussed. Few basic aspects of peptide biosynthesis and hurdles in
commercial production were highlighted in the discussion. Biological activities of bioactive
peptides include improvement of digestive and gastrointestinal functions, growth factors,
and nonimmune disease defence. These are also helpful in improving the heat stress of
farm animals. However, optimum exploitation of bioactive peptides for ruminant nutrition
and health is an exciting scientific and technological challenge that is yet to be explored
in field application.
