The self defense mechanism by which a plant safequards itself from the other plants in the struggle for survival led to allelopathy. This character is of utmost importance to the farm managers as well as for researchers to work in a cropping system. In view of the sunflower gaining importance in a cropping system, the work on allelopathic effects of sunflower has been reviewed in this paper. The stem parts of sunflower have more allelopathic potential followed by leaf and root. Among the factors affecting the allelochemicais production, water stress and temperature play an important role. Also, the review confirms the autotoxic effect of sunflower.
