Conversion of organic phosphorus to inorganic phosphorus is essential for the effective utilization of phosphate by the plants. The mineralization of organic P is mediated by phosphatases that hydrolyze C-O-P ester bends. The origin of phosphatase, the formation of phosphatase - humus complex and the role of phosphatase in the uptake of nutrient have been discussed.
